MONIKA SMEKOT
Born in Poland and based in Edinburgh for the last 6 years. While doing her master degree in Indian Studies she started her dance training in contemporary dance and contact improvisation with Theatre of Open Creation. She has also graduated from the school of Dance Drama and Mime in Poland. Monika has always been interested in rhythm based dance forms (flamenco, indian classical dance: bharatanatyam & odissi). Monika has also been exploring unique forms of expression such as BUTOH. She has been studying from the Japanese master Rhizome Lee (SUBBODY BUTOH SCHOOL) for two years.
Strong curiosity in the visual aspect of performance took Monika to develop interests in video art, the results of which she incorporates in her performance practice.
In 2012 she created POZA project - a platform that promotes innovative approach to performing art (www.pozaproject.org ).The word ‘poza’ comes from Polish and means ‘out of, outside, beyond and pose’. The main idea behind POZA project is to create opportunities for dance/movement artists and performers to explore new territories within a specific group set up.
